About me

Creativity

“A melody may carry you anywhere, at any time — the challenge is to find the ones still waiting to be discovered and capture them. For me, composing is a balance between spontaneous joy and critical self-judgement: exploring melodic development and harmonic nuance the way a novelist invents stories, a poet plays with rhymes, or a painter explores colors.

Awards

TV productions with my music have been nominated for or received “Prix Jeunesse”, “Golden Chest”, “Prix Danube” and Norway’s “Gullruten”. I was the main composer of the Nordic TV series “Myggan” (52 episodes, with SVT, YLE, DR and NRK), and my radio drama scores — “David Copperfield”, “The Weirdstone of Brisingamen”, “Tom Sawyer” and more — were released on CD.

Music Education

Educated at the University of Oslo, I studied composition with Maj Sønstevold, jazz piano with Egil Kapstad, and one season with saxophonist Jan Garbarek, plus a scholarship to the BBC Composers Workshop. For over 30 years I was a presenter and producer at NRK’s music department, hosting live concerts with the Oslo Philharmonic and learning by following rehearsals and reading scores.

Influences


The Beatles’ magic melodies, the modal, laid-back jazz of Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue” period, and classical recordings from Bach and Mozart to Ravel, Stravinsky, Grieg and Sibelius.
